Croatia is a beautiful country along the eastern Adriatic coast in Europe. It was part of the former Yugoslavia. People in this area are Slavic, migrating from what is now Poland in the 6th<\/span><\/sup> century. The Adriatic Highway hugs the coastline with beautiful views. The coastline has more than a thousand islands. The grey limestone coast and dark green vegetation goes well with the blue Adriatic Sea. There are a number of tourist resorts along the coast.<\/p>\n

Trip information<\/h3>\n

This trip is part of an Overseas Adventure trip called “Crossroads of the Adriatic”. I flew from the US through Munich to Dubrovnik. We toured by bus throughout the region, visiting Montenegro<\/a>, Bosnia<\/a>, and Slovenia<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n

Dubrovnik is far south along the coast and cut off from the rest of the country by a narrow Bosnian access to the Adriatic. Dubrovnik was an independent city-state for many years. The Old Town still has its medieval wall and many of the old buildings. The walk on top of the walls around the Adriatic side is interesting. It is a picturesque city. There is a funicular to the top of the hill overlooking the city. It has a great view and a restaurant. The photo st the top of the page is a panoramic taken from St. Lawrence Fortress. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. It is a big city that is the crossroads for railroads joining east and west. It’s Lower Town has modern grid of streets laid out in the 19th century. A short ride on the shortest municipal funicular takes you the picturesque Upper Town. Originally two medieval towns, Gradec and Kaptol, were on adjoining hills and fought during the centuries but today are joined into the city’s upper town.<\/p>\n

Plitvice lakes are an amazing group of 16 lakes cascading down the limestone cliffs. They are fed by streams and springs. Veliki Slap, the 256 foot waterfall is on the right of the tall waterfall photo. It is where the river Plitvice river drops into the in the Korana river. The lakes are about two hours drive from Zagreb.<\/p>\n

Outside Zagreb is an area with green hills and picturesque villages. There is an art gallery in Klanjec, containing sculptures by Antun Augustincic and an outdoor museum of Marshal Tito’s birthplace, Kumrovec.<\/p>\n
